___________Brief descriptions of the gift books for our members:
--Shusha Guppy (nee Assar), who passed away in March of 2008, was representative of generations of Iranians who while deeply steeped in their own traditions and rooted firmly in the soil of Iran, made their way westward and became bridges between the old country and the new ones where they now made their homes. Shusha embodied the best of Iranian culture and the best of Western culture as well. She blended these worlds effortlessly and left us testaments to her talent in her songs and her writings. The Blindfold Horse is a moving example of her evocative power and stirs deep memories in the reader of a bygone era.
--Masoud Behnoud is the consumate storyteller, and once the reader is entangled in Behnoud's web of tales from the past and the present, it becomes increasingly difficult to leave his world to come back to the reality of the reader's own. With his historical novels of Ameeneh (forthcoming in English translation by Sara Phillips in 2010) and Khanoum (Pegasus Press, 2008) Behnoud transports his readers to a time that still looms large in the imagination of Iranians, the Qajar era, and retraces for us the fantastic and often heartrending journeys of his heroines and through them our own. In Khanoum Behnoud speaks to us with such power and beauty about the human spirit in the form of Khanoum that we are left wondering how he could conjure up this mesmerizing voice if she were, indeed, only a fiction of his imagination.
--Persian Poets is a collection of poetry from Omar Khayyam to Sana'i, Attar, Rumi, Hafez, Sa'adi and others, beautifully produced by Everyman's Library Pocket Poets (Afred A. Knopf). It includes portraits by Abol Hassan Ghaffari of of Nasser-ed-Din Shah and Emam Qoli Mirza E'mad-ed-Dowleh (Dowlatshahi) on the dustjacket.
